Artist Statement

This piece is a commissioned portrait of the famous clown Emmet Kelly. I researched his life, and came up with the composition after reading about who he was as a man and a performer.

I tried to capture both aspects, especially in his eyes, and his day-to-day action of reading a newspaper rather than simply "clowning around."

I sold this painting in college for a starving artist price of $50!
